Comparison of the Racial Breakdown of The Greater Boston Neighborhood Noise Survey Participants and Populations in both Somerville, MA and Boston, MA

Ideally, we would have liked for our race/ethnicity percentages to have reflected census population breakdowns in regards to race. However, comparing the racial breakdown of our survey participants to those of our two major participating cities we can clearly see where our survey both over and under-represent racial groups. The majority of survey respondents were white (83%), which is a higher percentage than both Somerville and Boston, suggesting that we have an over-representation of white responses. Black, Asian, and Hispanic/Latino categories were both underrepresented. According to 2010 Census results, the City of Boston is:
CALL TO ACTION: While we took great efforts to make sure our survey was accessible to all (attending community meetings in under-served neighborhoods, survey translation into additional languages, and reaching out to community activists), an even more targeted approach will be necessary for our next update.
