The City of Boston graciously supplied us with noise complaint data from August 2015 – July 2016. This heat map shows us the complaint hot spots in the city. Complaints are categorized into the following groups: alarms, barking dogs, fireworks, loud music, a general “noise” category, and loud parties. To us, this heat map represents, to a large degree, swaths of the city where residents are at their wit’s end with regards to noise.
Because sleep disruption is one of the main ways sound can impact both our mental and physical health, we additionally describe noise complaints during “sleeping hours”, which is defined as the time between 9 pm and 5:59 am.
For a more detailed analysis of noise complaints within the City of Boston, visit HERE. We rigorously analyze this noise complaint data by time of day, day of week, and month both overall and by Boston neighborhood.
