Welcome to our East Boston Report Card! Eastie (as residents of the neighborhood like to call it) was once at the heart of the shipbuilding industry (thanks to its location right next to Boston Harbor) and has always been a community of immigrants. Today’s population consists of Italian Americans and immigrants Central America, South American, and South East Asia. Because of the proximity to the Boston Harbor, Eastie residents also enjoy some of the best views in the city. No matter where you live, you most likely can see either the beautiful Boston Skyline or calming presence of the Harbor.
East Boston is also bounded by several major roads, the largest being Interstate 90 (I-90) which has an average daily traffic volume of over 50,000 vehicles. It is also home to Logan International Airport, which sees close to 400,000 domestic and international flights a year. According to our back-of-the-envelope calculations, that’s almost 1 plane launch or landing every minute! Sound stemming from both the I-90 and Logan can make large stretches of the day quite unbearable in regards to noise levels.
