Welcome to the South Boston and South Boston Waterfront report cards! South Boston’s tough-as-nails reputation came from its beginnings as a predominately working class, factory neighborhood. In recent years, however, South Boston has become one of the most desirable places to live. The South Boston Waterfront is now a vibrant mixed-use luxury neighborhood, which plays host to incredible restaurants, hotels, and shops. This area is also home to the World Trade Center and the Institute of Contemporary Art.
Residents here tend to complain about the noise from road traffic (these neighborhoods are surrounded by both Interstate 90 and Interstate 93), construction, tourism, and aircraft noise. There is also still a strong industrial presence in certain areas of South Boston, which, too, carries with it its own unique soundscape.
